Electric chainsaws- are they any good?
message from banhappinesspills on 8 Nov 2002
I have had a Makita 16 inch electric chainsaw for about 10 years. I
have had the chain on backwards for a couple of years so it never cut
very well because the cutting teeth only work in one direction. I
switched chain around and it cuts pretty good. Yes, I am a very
stupid person. The off switch is stuck in the on position. I took it a
part and the switch is very flimsy. It worked after i put it back
together, but it is a very dangerous fault. The oil leaks out too. All
in all, i guess it does a pretty good job. You really have to be
careful of this cheap stuff though . I would never trust an off switch
again.

You answered your own question.

A chain saw can buck up and attack you. You're lucky the chain didn't
break before.
Throw it away and buy a better saw.

If you're asking (title of your article) are they any good, my answer
would be "no", which is probably why there are so few of them.

It sounds to me like the user is at fault, not the saw... If one
understands that an electric isn't meant to be used hard as most of the
decent gas saws, then the user might get better use of the tool. The person
had the chain on backwards??? Sounds to me like the problems with the saw
are self imposed by the user. No where does the person mention how the saw
was used- for trimming? smaller trees? Cutting firewood? I leaks oil? was it
stored properly?
I have a cheap piece of sh*t electric mccollough that despite it's weakness
compared to the stihl o8 (?) I also have, does what is needed. Keep the
chain sharp, don't overload the thing, use a heavy extension cord and keep
the chain adjusted and the saw should give you what you need. It isn't
"foolproof"... regards Pat

I tend to agree with you. It cuts quite effectively. Gas engines can
be finicky.
It doesn't self-oil so I will have to take it apart and see what is
going on.
Especially when you consider price, I think they are suitable for
people with small yards. The switch mechanism looks like something
you'd find in cracker jacks, though. They may have been recalled but
they had no way of contacting me.
